Spring is here!

From one day to another nature has reawakened from a sleepy and grey winter as soon as a warm sun started shining again.

After a long, cold, rainy and snowy winter, spring has arrived at Ancora del Chianti with its gifts. It is very pleasant  to feel the warmth of the first spring sunrays on my face together with a soft breeze. And I become very…..lazy….I would love to spend all my day swinging on the hammock if I only could.

Plum trees are in blossom and birds start singing again too. They fly incessantly looking for food and straw, preparing their nests. They are very busy. Last year, Gunilla, an expert birdwatcher from Sweden, recognised at least 43 different birds, both from their singing and their shape. This is the result of growing organic!

In the beginning of spring, you can find little flowers in the grass. We have of course daffodils and anemones, but the little shy flowers hidden by the grass are the most amazing. They cannot bare the heat so they will disappear as soon as the sun becomes stronger. Now is the moment for appreciating them at their best. Pure beauty hidden in small things…..

Anyway, daffodils and anemones are the protagonists of spring fields. Yellow and purple will be combined in the next few weeks and the house will be full of country bouquets.

From Stockholm: what to do in winter

What to do in a long and cold winter night?

Here a suggestion from our friend Thomas from Stockholm: remember of holidays with friends!

Past and Future Holiday are an instant source of joy: as soon as we start thinking of holidays, we relax and our mouths smile…..What we shared with the people we met, what the places we visited told us, the exotic cooking and drinking we tasted and the unexpected events that accured are all part of our memory, part of our life. And usually the best part of it!

This is exactly what Thomas knows and suggests:

Hello Laura!

This Weekend I have been at my old home town Skövde and meet some of my old friends. Some of them you have already met, and that is Anita and Lars.

I told them about our mailing and they like it. Last evening we got a party and here we have some wine from our other friends. Do you recognise this?

I loved to have some wine from you sometimes. And there we tasted it.

Have a nice week to all of you and I give you a great hug from me in Sweden. Thomas

PALIO 2010: teams are getting organised

On the first Sunday of September, Greve in Chianti celebrate its “Palio” with “Rioni in Piazza”.

It is a competition within teams corrisponding to different parts of the village of Greve in Chianti and its surroundings. The competition is based on a parade with a theme, a tug-of-war for strong men and a sack race for teen agers. The jury judges the quality, the originality, and the coreagraphy of the parade. Furthermore it judges also the sport competition performances and regularity of the race.

The parades are always sumptous and every team develops an original concept after the theme. The theme for 2009 was: “European Myths and Legends”.  So we had parades of: Myth of Eldorado, Ancient Greek Myths, Myth of Lancelot and King Arthur, The Ring of the Nibelungen with a beatiful Wagner sound track, Celtic Myths, Lord of the Rings, etc.

The whole population of Greve in Chianti is involved in the preparation and in the parade. Most of the costumes are hand made and the luckiest teams have as supporters carpenters, blacksmiths, taylors, decorator at the disposal of creating fabolous cart. Everything is taken very seriously and I was really impressed by the interpretating capabilities of the people parading. It was funny to recognise professionals, decorators, civil servants, postmen, butchers, mechanics, brokers, bank accountants of Greve….in different clothes. Most of them have been working for Ancora del Chianti as well!

We do not know yet what will be the theme this year, but teams are already starting to re-organise to be ready for competing and having fun. A few weeks ago there was the meeting of Sant’Anna Team for deciding the subject for this year. Most of the picture here are under permission of its President, Mr Andrea Ceccatelli, the Knight- butcher and talented photographer. A big thank to Andrea for his generosity and kindness.
