The
Chianti area is well known for its magnificent landscapes,
delicious wine and pleasant rural holidays. But there are also other
reasons to admire it. It has been the land for departure, inspiration
and return of many important people who changed the course of history.
The name "Anchor of Chianti" reminds us
of the incredible coincidence
of meeting them during your visit in Chianti:
The first citizen of New York:
Giovanni da Verrazzano (Greve in Chianti, 1485 - Brasil
1528), exploring the coasts of North America, discovered New York Bay
and the Hudson river, trying to find a way to India for King Frances
I of France, in 1524. The Verrazzano Bridge was be named after him and
a small statue in Battery Park says: "To Giovanni da Verrazzano,
the first citizen of New York".
A man who gave his name to a continent:
Amerigo Vespucci (Florence 1454 - Seville 1512) lived
in Montefioralle and here is buried the last descendent of the family.
He was the son of a Florentine attorney and in 1489 he moved to Seville.
There he met Christopher Columbus and participated in the preparation
of his third voyage. Amerigo Vespucci is mainly remembered from his
letters and insights into the voyage and of America from which the European
public received, for the first time, news of this new continent.
Mona Lisa's Smile:
Leonardo da Vinci (Vinci 1452 - Amboise 1519): this
famous painter, architect, engineer and inventor of the Renaissance
period lived in Vignamaggio Castle between 1503 and 1506 as guest of
Francesco del Giocondo and here he painted Mona Lisa, the only painting
that he decide to take with him to France during his exile.
"The Prince" and his Reason of State:
Niccolò Machiavelli (Florence 1469 - 1527),
writer, historian, and political critic of Renaissance time spent the
last years of his life in Sant'Andrea in Percussina, close to San Casciano
Val di Pesa, and here he finished his masterpiece: "The Prince".
